Essential Question and Answer
History - Strand A2
How have economic, political and cultural decisions promoted or prevented the growth of personal freedom, individual responsibility, equality and respect for human dignity?
Following the American Revolutionary War, the Founding Fathers wanted to prevent the intermingling of religion and politics unlike the English. They declared the separation of the Church and the State within the first amendment to the Constitution. Partially due to this, waves of revivals took place around the nation resulting in the Second Great Awakening. Choosing what faith to follow allowed people’s personal freedoms to grow. With many more ideologies such as Universalism, equality for all became an increasingly popular idea. Deliverance was encouraged and therefore improved individual responsibility during this time period. All of these events can be linked back to the political decision that the Founding Father made: to keep the Church and the State as separate entities.
